A Heacham man has managed to shed nine stones after being told to “lose weight or die”.
Steve Percy lost around half his bodyweight, dropping from 25 stone to 16 stone.
And his wife Sue, who joined in to support him, went from just under 15 stone to 10 stone.
The couple have shared their success story for World Heart Day, celebrated every year on September 29 to raise awareness of one of the world’s number one killers, cardiovascular disease.
Heart disease and stroke is the leading cause of death claiming some 18.6 million lives each year.
During World Heart Day, the global campaign sees individuals, families, communities and governments around the world participate in activities to take charge of their health.
For Steve and Sue this day holds special significance since they joined a weight loss programme to benefit their health.
Steve has a history of heart failure and fast atrial fibrillation and had been told he needed to lose almost half his body weight to save his life.
His doctors were keen for him to lose weight to help alleviate his symptoms and prolong his lifespan.
After being told to ‘lose weight or die’ Steve was in a health crisis and needed to lose half his body weight to survive.
His wife joined him for support and they have lost some 14 stone between them.
Referred by the NHS to a weight loss group, Steve and Sue joined Jo Jackson’s Slimming World club in Hunstanton.
Since joining the group, in under a year Steve has reduced his weight to 16 stone making a loss of some nine stone. His body mass index (BMI) was 48.6 and is now 30.8.
Sue’s current weight is now just over 10 stone and she has reduced her BMI from 34.6 to 24.6.
Jo said: “At his last check up Steve was told they didn’t need to see him again for a year and they were thrilled with the efforts he had made to lose weight and the impact that had had on his symptoms.
“He follows a vegetarian diet and has been able to find plenty of meals to enjoy. Sue loves the versatility of food and fitting round her work shifts.
“She has also embraced being more active through Slimming World’s body magic plan and she recently completed the 24K walk along the Norfolk Coast raising funds for East Anglian Air Ambulance.
