It’s a busy time for wedding organizers, owing to the backlog of postponed 2020 weddings and a growing number of proposals taking place in 2021. Wedding suppliers (including reception venues, hotels and resorts, photographers, and florists) are mainly full to the brim, with many having long waiting lists. For them, the challenge is not only to fulfill a burgeoning demand but also to incorporate new trends that have arisen since the start of the pandemic. The world certainly isn’t the same as it was two years ago, and current wedding trends reflect the zeitgeist of this unique time in history.
Outdoor Engagements
Nature is now at the fore of wedding proposals and receptions, with health and safety coupled with a greater appreciation of the Great Outdoors, leading to a penchant for al fresco events. Couples choose botanical gardens, parks, and seaside escapes for both engagements and ceremonies/receptions, with professional photographers on hand to capture the moment. Some couples make engagements a luxury experience, proposing during weekend getaways in seaside or mountainside destinations.
Relaxed Luxury
Wedding experts The Knot have released their 2022 Trends report, highlighting ‘relaxed luxury’ as one of the top wedding styles. Although some wedding participants will still be donning black ties, guests will most likely encounter one or more festive, casual features at the next few weddings they attend. Think cool food trucks, dance parties, standing cocktail-style receptions in lavish gardens, and interactive/do-it-yourself elements such as giveaway cameras, photo booths, and buffet soup and snack tables for all-night celebrations.
Lab-Grown Diamonds Come to the Fore
The lab-grown diamond market is projected to reach $49.9 billion by 2030, with a CAGR of 9.4% from 2021 to 2030. As reported by Business Wire, diamonds are still the chosen stone for engagement rings. Still, synthetic diamonds such as moissanite (which can cost around 30% less than natural varieties) are famous for those wanting sustainable rocks at a lower price. With respect to engagement jewelry styles, tradition still holds sway. Most couples are still opting for round- or oval-cut solitaire diamonds, accompanied by plane or pave bands. However, a growing percentage choose stackable rings (think eternity bands, round inset diamonds, infinity-shaped bands, crossing X-shaped diamond pave bands, and similar). Mixed metals are also popular, and yellow gold bands have seen an 11% rise in popularity since 2017.
Sustainability is Everything
Sustainable weddings have been rising vertiginously in popularity, with a new consciousness regarding the importance of our planet, leading couples to make eco-friendlier choices. These include choosing visually impactful local destinations (imagine a beautifully natural wedding under an ancient tree or a glam-filled celebration in a Long Island mansion), relying on suppliers with a known commitment to sustainability, and opting for digital, recycled, or hemp-made invitations instead of traditional paper ones. Green couples are thinking of ways to be kinder to the environment, ditching cut flowers for potted ones and considering alternative wedding bouquets made of sewn or paper flowers.
Weddings are back in a big way, though current trends show a significant shift in the way couples dream of celebrating their big day. Sustainability is arguably the most influential trend, with couples selecting nearby destinations to reduce their carbon footprint. Couples are also making the most of nature, choosing verdant or azure settings to say I do or present their loved one with a ring that symbolizes eternal love.
