When looking to lose weight, it’s common knowledge that the first step it to cut out sugar. Many people’s first point of call is limiting sweet treats such as chocolate and desserts – all things high in calories and sugar.
But when it comes to fizzy drinks there is a bit of confusion around the word “diet”.
Diet Coke, for example, is deemed a healthier version of full-fat, with one can containing 189 calories.
The former only contains one calorie, but it has secret ingredients that experts warn to stay away from if wanting to shed pounds.
While diet drinks don’t contain real sugar or calories, they do contain a lot of additives and artificial ingredients including sweeteners.
The blend of low-calorie sweeteners (aspartame and acesulfame-K), means it can be sugar-free and calorie-free, without compromising on taste.

But these ingredients are full of unnatural chemicals that can cause the body to crave more high-calorie and sugar-laden foods.
Dr. Sharon Fowler of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, stated: “Calorie-free does not equal consequence-free.”
So while it may seem like a healthier choice, a growing body of evidence shows that artificially sweetened diet sodas aren’t any better than their regular sugar alternatives.
Pharmacist Niraj Naik, who runs a blog called the The Renegade Pharmacist, claimed the diet fizzy drink can actually encourage the body to store fat, the opposite of what slimmers believe drinking the low-fat version would do.

He said: “From my experience as a community pharmacist helping people to get off medications for metabolic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and obesity, I found if people drink diet sodas they still get the same problems as people who drink normal soda.”
He explained that the chemical aspartame “triggers taste receptors and tricks your body into thinking it has just processed sugar”.
Within 20 minutes, Naik explained the drink “may send your body into fat storage mode”.
60 minutes after finishing the can, he explained the body begins craving another Diet Coke.

“This makes you likely to reach for another soda, or worse, some other junk food you consider to be safe and the cycle continues.”
He warned a can of Diet Coke provides “no nourishment” and “will never quench your thirst as it dehydrates rather than hydrates your body”.
A nine-year study published in Diabetes Care, found that older adults who drank diet fizzy drinks actually gained weight, especially around their middle.Researchers found if a person drinks diet soda daily, it can increase their chance of obesity by 65 percent during the next decade.
Experts at Penn Medical explained artificial sweeteners may also confuse people’s bodies into miscalculating the number of calories they are consuming daily.
This can then cause their metabolism to slow down, making it more challenging to burn off calories and lose weight.
The current calorie intake for adult women ranges from 1,600 calories per day to 2,400 calories per day.
