A Baltimore family is suing an appraiser and a mortgage lender after their home was allegedly undervalued severely because they are Black. The couple applied last year to refinance their mortgage, and said the deal seemed to be progressing until an appraiser said the home’s value was too low. The plaintiffs disagree with how the appraiser came up with the value and say it is because they are Black. A separate appraisal, done less than a year later after “whitewashing” the place by removing photos of Black people, said the home was worth $278,000 more than the initial appraisal. The appraisal company in the case, 20/20 Valuations, could not immediately be reached for comment.

The new king of South Africa’s Zulu nation Misuzulu kaZwelithini was enthroned in a colorful ceremony Saturday before hundreds of supporters in a rural part of KwaZulu-Natal province. The king dismissed those challenging his right to the throne in his first public comments on the issue. He was crowned as the traditional leader of the Zulu nation, although some members of the royal family dispute his right to succeed his late father King Goodwill Zwelithini. President Cyril Ramaphosa has recognized Misuzulu kaZwelithini as the rightful heir to the Zulu throne. Ramaphosa is set to present Misuzulu kaZwelithini with an official certificate pronouncing him the king of the Zulu people at a ceremony later this year.

New filings in a civil suit allege that a former Miami congressman who signed a $50 million consulting contract with Venezuela’s socialist government not only did no apparent work, but also channeled a large chunk of the money to a yacht company on behalf of a fugitive billionaire. The accusations against former Congressman David Rivera were filed Friday in New York federal court by opponents of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro who now control the U.S.-based affiliates of the South American nation’s state oil company. Rivera hasn’t been charged with any crime and is countersuing the company for money he says he’s owed.
Five New Mexico county jails and detention centers are weathering staff shortages that have pushed vacancy rates among correctional officers above 50%. The Albuquerque Journal reports at least one has resorted to transporting inmates to other facilities, including one in Texas 166 miles away. The Otero County Detention Center in Alamogordo is half staffed with 32 officers. County Attorney R.B. Nichols says they reached a critical point two weeks ago when there weren’t enough officers to walk the floor among the inmates. That prompted the administration’s request for help from other facilities. He says five agreed to house more than 100 inmates between them.

Will Zalatoris is out of the BMW Championship with back pain. Zalatoris felt a tweak in his lower back and withdrew after four holes. He says he wants to be ready for the FedEx Cup finale next week. Zalatoris is coming off his first PGA Tour victory last week to start the postseason. The win moved him to the top of the FedEx Cup standings and to No. 9 in the world. He was 1 under for the day and 4-under par for the tournament when he felt pain. He had treatment and played one more hole before pulling out.
Joe Flacco and the rest of the New York Jets’ starters might have to get comfortable on the sideline Monday night. Coach Robert Saleh says he’s unsure what the team’s plan will be for who’ll see the field in the Jets’ preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons. Saleh says he’s torn on his decision. It could be a little gamesmanship but it also could be feeling a bit cautious after seeing quarterback Zach Wilson go down for a few weeks with a knee injury in New York’s second offensive series of the preseason opener at Philadelphia. Chase Elliott has won the NASCAR Cup pole at Watkins Glen International, edging Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kyle Larson for the top spot. Elliott, a two-time winner at The Glen, turned a fast lap of 1 minute, 10.477 seconds around the 2.45-mile natural terrain road course. New York City police are investigating a crash that killed two men who were thrown from an all-terrain vehicle when it struck a tractor-trailer in Queens. Authorities say the ATV driver was then run over by the truck. Police say the men were traveling through an intersection toward a Manhattan-bound entrance to the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge when their ATV hit an oncoming tractor-trailer early Friday. Officials say the 22-year-old driver, a Bronx resident, was pronounced dead at the scene, and the unidentified passenger later died at a hospital. Police say both suffered severe head and body trauma, while the truck driver was not hurt.
